About me
I am software engineer, conference organiser and community leader in the Python/Django community. I love working with Python and Django for web development and sharing my knowledge with others through technical writing. I am currently pursuing a MSc in Software Engineering at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden courtesy of the Swedish Institute Global Professionals Scholarship.
My coding journey began when I was 14 years old, attending Zimuto High School in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. I studied Computer Studies for my O Level, and I loved it. We used Windows 95 and DOS machines back then, coding in BASIC and dBase III for databases. Internet access was very limited, and we mainly relied on our teachers and a few textbooks to learn programming. However, I still enjoyed it and pursued Computing at A Level, followed by a BSc in Computer Science at Midlands State University.
After graduation, I planned to work in telecoms, focusing on network engineering and systems administration to gain additional ICT experience before returning to software engineering and consultancy after five years. Although I entered consultancy after that period, it took me some time to return to coding. In 2015, I learnt Python through the Muzinda Hub Digital Skills programme, using the Treehouse online platform. Since then, I have coded in Python, developed websites with Django, and actively participated in the Python community.
Since 2016, I have organised many events, including several Django Girls events, PyCon Zimbabwe 2016/2017, DjangoCon Europe 2018, and DjangoCon Africa 2023/2025. I have also spoken at many conferences and delivered keynotes at PyCon Namibia 2017, DjangoCon Europe 2017/2023, PyCon Africa 2019, and DjangoCon US 2018. I served on the Django Software Foundation Board of Directors from 2018 to 2022, rising from Director (2018), through Vice President (2019-2020) to President (2021–2022).
